This announcement specifically concerns the Warmachine
tournament at the 2014 WestGamer Ultimates. (It does not concern the other two tournaments for 40K and Warhammer.)
Since its inception, the WestGamer Ultimates have been created as a format in which the top players of the state take part in a high level hobby competition to determine the best players and hobbyists in WA. This will be the 8th year of this premier tournament, and we have had 2 successful years of running Ultimate Warmachine as part of the lineup (since 2012) as well.
One of the things over the years that has made the Ultimates unique and added to the special nature of the event is the invitational aspect of the tournament. The fact that we only invite the top hobbyists in WA to attend adds to the honour and prestige of competing, and guarantees that after a tough year of fighting to qualify, players will be rewarded with a battle against the best to determine who deserves the ultimate title! Traditionally we have set the invite number at 16 players for each tournament for this reason (though the Warhammer Fantasy event was reduced to 12 since 2012 due to a slowing tournament scene in WA). It ensures that we only invite the (roughly) top quarter of the active tournament players in the state - making the invitation a privilege indeed.
In order to preserve the integrity of the event, it is necessary to ensure that we continue to invite the top tier of the players in WA, rather than just the majority of the current active tournament players. The current challenge relevant to this relates to the average Warmachine & Hordes event sizes in WA and the range of diversity in the players that frequently attend them.
As a result - this year we will be reducing the number of available invites to the Ultimate Warmachine tournament to 12. (10 ladder qualifiers and 2 wildcards.)
This may simply be a temporary change to the format for 2014, but we will see what next year brings and conduct a review with the relevant tournament data available in future months. This change to qualifying format should not be seen as anything negative relating to the growth and development of the current Warmachine and Hordes tournament scene in WA, as the truth is quite the contrary! However, this decision has been made to ensure that this year's event delivers the best we can offer within the scope of the current player pool in the local community.
Irrespective of this format adjustment - rest assured that the tournament will still be a tough, hard fought contest where the best come to do battle and show off their quality! We will be pulling out all the stops to ensure a fantastic event as usual, and we do not expect this change to distract from the enjoyment of everything else going on. It's not long now until the big weekend, but if you want a final chance to qualify for Ultimate Warmachine - then I strongly suggest that you check out Sanctify!
, which will probably be one of your best chances to improve your standing on the WestGamer Tournament League ladder
for the chance to earn one of the coveted Ultimates invites!
