I've just jumped on board with a Russian Coalition Battle Flotilla. I hope this is still a good time to see if this game floats my boat. I'd hate it to be a money-sink.

I will be moving my city visits to a Tuesday, so that will be my regular day.

I also want to paint my models up first as I don't like using unpainted minis. Yeah, despite the fact I'm not the world's greatest painter, I'm still anal like that.

Okay, so I'm pushing through these fairly quickly.

Is anyone up for giving me a couple of intro games? I'm reading through the book, and the textbookish nature of it isn't making a lot of sense. I guess I need to play a couple of games to get the hang of it.

I have the 23rd of December to the 6th of January off, so can potentially organise daytime games at Tactics depending on availability (although not on the public holidays).

Nice! I need to check family movements, but the Monday before Christmas is looking like a great time.

Just out if curiosity, to anyone who may be reading this, what points values would you normally play to? I am guessing 1500pts would be an average-sized game.

1500 will take a while to play, especially if you are learning.

I think we started out at 750, and worked out way up.

Oh, I have no plans to play at that points level until I have a sound grasp of the basic rules. Not to mention an understanding of how the game works in a tactical sense. I have no idea what constitutes a sound list other than the morsels of knowledge I have read on forums. Even there, you can only go on consensus as someone always has a counter-point.

Although after Christmas, I'll have some 2000pts+ of models accumulated, so at least in theory I'll have something to pull together a decent force with. Being a dad means choosing your own Christmas presents.

I think that at first we actually played about 500pt size games, to try and work out what the heck we were doing.
...
I need a refresher on how this game works :P

Well, if we can play Monday afternoon we can both make a hash of it together!

Okay, so my game versus James didn't happen today.

Who's up for giving me a trainer-wheels game or two? I am on leave for the next two weeks, so this weekend or next Monday afternoon are looking good. I'm trying to get hold of someone at the Gamers' Guild if a Saturday venue is required. If not, there's always Tactics.

I played AdvanceOp today in a little scratch match.

Learnings from my first game:
1. Stupid Empire of the Blazing Sun and their stupid things like movement and manoeuvrability.
2. Wow. That's a lot of rules and intricacies even at this low points level.
3. The exploding dice mechanic can lead to mouse-that-rawed scenarios.
4. Ablative Armour is the friend of the inexperienced player. And the experienced one might actually use it to win a game.
5. Tiny Flyers- very small planes have a very large pile of rules associated with them.

No worries man. I'm good for next Tuesday too. You want to try 400 points Naval core? Or crank it up to 500?

I'm sure theres rules we missed. I mean we didn't use air other than tiny flyers and no land units, shields generators, submersibles, etc etc ;)

Don't worry, everyone under-estimates the frigates. You should see the corvettes in action

Don't worry, they used to be much harder, infact, they were a whole game unto themselves.
