I thought I would do a bit of an introduction to the great game of Infinity. Please feel free to post and add or correct anything in this post.

Infinity....What is that?
Infinity is a true scale sci-fi skirmish game produced by Corvus Belli which is set 175 years in the future. It is set in the real world, however humanity has reached the stars, allowing previous countries to group together and create federations that control various planets. Conflict happens frequently between the federations as they struggle for resources such as tesseum (a mineral used in weaponry) and silk (used to create artificial bodies), domination over planets/each other and fight against invasion. Although there have been wars, most conflicts are carried out by small groups of elite soldiers from rival factions.

So what's the mechanics?

As mentioned previously, Infinity is a skirmish game, where each side will field roughly 5-12 minatures, depending on the scale of the game played. Infinity is a game where each player will have an active role, even if it is not your turn as your miniatures can react to enemy models that activate within line of site. It is therefore a very brutal and unforgiving game, where mistakes will be punished and strategy is key.

Infinity has a few unique concepts which make it stand out from other games; these are the use of orders, ARO's and face to face rolls. Whilst daunting initially, these concepts can be very easy to pick up, and make the game incredibly exciting.

Orders are what you use to control your units. You generate orders for every model which you have on the board. These orders are used to activate your models, and can be spent on any model in your army, any number of times. By spending an order on a model, you are activating that model, allowing it to perform a number of skills. You can use one short movement skill (i.e. move, climb, jump, go prone) + one short skill (shoot, dodge, move, climb, discover), OR one long skill (i.e. supression fire, cautious movement) per order. You also get one special lieutenants order which can only be spent on the lieutenant.

AROs or Automatic Reaction Orders are generated by every enemy model within line of site of the model that you are spending an order on. They can use their ARO to use one short skill in response to the model who is activating (i.e. shoot back, dodge away etc.). This means that you always need to carefully plan where to position your models to generate the least amount of AROs from the enemy as possible.

Face to face rolls is the dice mechanic in which the game works. Infinity uses d20's where each player has a target number when performing certain crucial skills (such as shoot or dodge), and in most instances, you will need to roll equal to or under the target number in order to succeed in the roll. This target number is often modified by things such as distance to the target and cover. When two models are targeting each other (i.e. the active model declares a shot against an enemy model, the enemy model reacts by shooting back), a face to face roll is generated. The two players roll off and the player who gets the closest to his target number, without going over the target number wins the face to face roll and succeeds in shooting or dodging his opponent.

Aaaaah! So there's bullets flying everywhere!!! What factions are slinging these bullets at each other?

Many of the factions in Infinity are based on a conglomerate of countries from today who have united, but there are also a couple of factions who don't fit into this categorie...

Pan Oceania are the....AUSSIES...that have taken over the world. Basically the super power that is America collapsed so Australia united with New Zealand and a few countries in South East Asia, and ended up unifying several countries throughout the world. Pan Oceania is the world super power and controls many star systems throughout the galaxy. It is a federation characterised by the most advance weaponry and technology held by humans, and the low model count but high quality of models is particularly characteristic of this.

Yu Jing is a faction that encompasses most of the Asian nations (i.e. Japan, China, Korea etc.), who have unified under the Chinese Emperor. They are direct rivals to Pan Oceania, and are second in 'super power status' to them, holding weaponry and technology which is close to the level of Pan Oceania. Yu Jing are a nation that like to be in your face. They love their close quarters weapons, such as Chain Rifles, and excel in CC (don't be fooled by this though, Infinity is not a CC game). They are also really tough. They have some amazing heavy infantry with high armour and a high BTS, so can be tough to hack.

Ariadna...oh my one true love. The nation of Ariadna is one that has been lost in time. When the first Black Hole was explored 100 years ago, a mixture of French, Russian, Scottish, American and people from other countries around the world went through the black hole and landed on a new planet. However, the hole closed and could not be reopened, so these people were abandoned on this new planet without any help. Nations became bitter against each other, and the Russians ended up taking control. To add to this, the planet consists of hostile creatures known as Antipodes who attack anyone on site. The people who landed on this planet (dubbing themselves Ariadna) became tough in dealing with the conditions on the planet, and Antipode assaults. As such, Ariadna are a tough faction, with low tech weaponry but can also be fielded in high number to overwhelm.

Haqqislam is another super nation, like Yu Jing and Pan Oceania, but only control one planet. The consist of people who have united from the Middle Eastern nations, and are focused on the expansion of knowledge, and upholding Islamic principles to maintain peace and stability in their nation. Due to their focus on knowledge, they have access to great Doctors, and bio technology to devestate other factions. Haqqislam are another low tech faction, but have access to religious troops (who won't run) and great medics, as well as some great 'hidden' units, such as those with holoprojector (can hide as another unit) and impersonation (impersonates the enemy to infiltrate enemy lines).

Combined Army...aaaah the aliens!!! The Combined Army consists of united races of aliens, controlled by an advanced being known as the Evolved Intelligence, hell bent on conquering all other races in the galaxy to unlock the deep secrets of ascendence. The Evolved intelligence wants to dominate and amalgamate humanity into it's army and are in continuous conflict with human factions on the world of Paradiso. They consist of the Shasvastii (think Predator), Morat (think red planet of the apes with guns), and the Exrah (aspects of the EI) who have access to some very alternative and organic technology, as well as amazing camouflage and weaponry...they can pretty much build some great balanced lists, but also have access to special rules and equipment that is not seen in other races, so can be difficult to face.

Nomads are a conglomerate of REBELS from across the human sphere, who have essentially fled and formed their own nation that roams the galaxy in giant ships which act as cities. They are the one's who oppose Pan Oceania, and wish for freedom to do as they wish, whether it be delve further into technology than is permitted, or be guilty of seeking further pleasures. I consider the Nomads to be a 'tricksy' faction. They possess some amazing hacking capabilities to hack people's armour, remotes and TAGs, and posses some very solid weaponry and camouflage in themselves. They also use a lot of technology, like remotes (robots) and TAGs.

There is also the ALEPH, a relatively new race introduced in the expansion, Human Sphere. Aleph is the artificial intelligence that pretty much reigns over the Human Sphere. ALEPH watches over and governs the Human Sphere, ensuring that no threats are posed to humanity and protecting it from other AI's or alien entities which dare attack. The forces of ALEPH consist of tonnes of high technology robots and androids, who, although limited in their numbers, are tough as nails. They represent the elite, governing force of robots with the most advanced technology in the game. As such, they are tough to hack, tough to take down and have access to some incredible heavy infantry.

And finally, the newest race released is the Tohaa. The Tohaa are an ancient race who have been fighting a long battle against the EI. They have recently come into contact with the human sphere to use humanity as a 'speed bump' against the EI, to give the Tohaa more time to advance and resist the Combined Army attacks. The Tohaa excell in biotechnology. They have access to a lot of viral weaponry, which is deadly to basic troops. They also wear symbiotic armour that is comprised of living organisms, which is tough, but vulnerable to fire. Perhaps their most unique ability is fireteam: Tohaa, that allows you to link three different Tohaa units together, to activitate from one order, allowing them to be highly mobile.

That all sounds awesome, how do I get into this?

I would encourage anyone interested in this amazing game to visit the website at http://www.infinitythegame.com. You can access lots of information from their website, including the full set of rules. They also have a community forum which can be very helpful for new games.
The Infinity Wiki at http://infinitythegame.wikispot.org/Home, can also be helpful for players of all experience to help clarify rules.
At http://www.beastofwar.com, they dedicated an entire week to Infinity in 2010 and again in 2012, and have many resources available from the site to help you jump right into the game, including videos of how the game is played and a quick start manual.
Infinity is available from some local hobby stores and many online stores. The best way to get into Infinity is to purchase a starter box and play some 100 to 150 point games purely with the starter box to get a hang of the rules (which will set you back just over $40). Roughly 3 d20's will also be required. Infinity also requires A LOT of terrain, so make sure you have some handy or can access it at a club.
A commonly coined Infinity phrase is; IT'S NOT YOUR LIST IT'S YOU so list building isn't a big component of this game. After you have a starter box, just pick up what you think looks cool as nothing is unplayable in this game.

that is a fantastic write up Bokke.

the linear gameplay is a standout feature of this system and makes the game very enjoyable in both players turns.

the 'Buy In' is also relatively cheap, like most Skirmish games you can get a book and a starter set for around $70 off Defiant i think.

all the models look aces, so it is hard to pick, but give it a go

Each faction, with the exception of ALEPH and the Mercs, can alter their base list by taking a Sectorial list, essentially a faction within a faction.

Sectorials work by removing access to some units but increasing the AVA (allowance) of others. For example, PanOcceania can take Military Orders, which allows them great numbers of Teutonics, Magisters and others at the expense of TAGs and many specialised units.

Awesome input, nice one Dave! Sectorials are a great element of the game and allow you to create a more specific 'theme' for your force. Beginning players shouldn't be scared away from trying a sectorial as I have ALWAYS played sectorials (French/Merovingian sectorial for Ariadna, Military Orders for Pan Oceania). A lot of the sectorials have their own starter boxes too.

Nice write up!!!

Infinity certainly looks the goods, I have bought in with a Sizable Military Orders force mostly based on the cool models and the only negative I have seen to the system so far is the assembly of models (Tiny Tiny pieces!!!)

I look forward to getting them on the table top in the near future :)

Hehe, I do love that model. I've still got to get my hands on a Traktor Mul, I keep forgetting to order one when I place defiant orders!
Will do a quick summary on TAGs either today or tomorrow.
