The time has come once again to pack up our fittest fighters and finest brains in the WA 40K scene, and send them over east to show the rest of the country how it's done!
For those unaware: Loosely based on the format from the ETC (European Team Challenge), the ATC (Australasian Team Challenge) is an Australasian based event where teams of 40K players representing each state or territory in the region travel to a central location to do battle for top honours! The format of the event lends itself heavily to the "gaming" side of the hobby rather than the "complete hobbyist" side, and as such focuses primarily on the generalship ability of the players in a team format. Each player on a team is required to bring a different army (meaning lists built from different codexes) to the event to ensure variety and sufficient challenge to the team approach. Last year saw the tournament's second year as 8 teams from across the country (well, New Zealand as well) travelled over to Melbourne to battle it out. WA sent a crack squad of 40K big guns over to compete, and whilst unfortunately we didn't bring home the gold - we came closer than ever and actually were the only team able to beat the overall winners (in the final round) by the end of the event (NZ). It was once again a ripper of a weekend by all reports.
You can find threads on last year's event here
. Discussions on this year's ATC can also be found over in the WargamerAU forums here
The 40K Australasian Team Challenge for 2013 will be held on the 7th & 8th September
in Adelaide, SA
. There will be a small fee for each team to enter, and travel & accomodation arrangements and costs are to be the responsibility of the individual players in each of the teams. (The hosting state is rotated each year as the contest continues to develop) This year we are expecting attendance from the same 8 teams that attended the event in 2012.
Details for the 2013 event
(Note - these are mostly locked in, but be aware that there is still a small chance of change on a couple of points):
- 7th & 8th September 2013
- Adelaide, SA (The German Club)
- 1850 point armies
- Each codex can only be used once within a team, either as a primary OR an ally
- Standard 40K rulebook scenarios (mysterious terrain will not be used)
- All fortifications are permitted
- Players pack will be available by the end of May. Team submissions due by end of June
As WA state rep on the ATC committee, one of my most important tasks is to coordinate our team selection for the event. The system we have used for this since 2012 has ensured a very fair and transparent process, whilst giving us the best fighting chance we can manage of sending our absolute top generals over.
QUALIFYING FOR 2013 ATC - WA TEAM SELECTION
Nominations this year will be awarded in order to the top position holders on the WestGamer Tournament League 40K General's Ladder
- 3 months prior to the ATC (so, standings as of the 1st June update). In the event of anyone passing on attendance for their allocated nomination, the sequence will continue to the next name in line until a full team of 8 players have been confirmed as attending.
If you can see by the current standings that you are likely to qualify for team selection, you can post in this thread to confirm whether you will be accepting your position on the team. I also encourage anyone who doesn't initially qualify who is still interested in going to represent WA as well to post here, and then if we continue to count down we will simply take the names presented and work out the highest priority in terms of the above selection criteria.
Once we have the minimum 8 confirmed, the next stage will be for that group to vote in a captain, begin planning, and work out which army each player will take (note that players will be expected to take forces that they have a proven track record of success with, but may also need to be flexible so that the team as a whole can take a competitive selection of armies across). There is a private forum for this purpose here on WestGamer which will be opened to team players - but confirming names is our top priority first. Note that the team may also be extended out to 9 people (we are permitted 1 "support" person as backup), but whether to take this option and extend a further invite to the next person on the list will be up to the initial team that is selected to decide.
So for those who want to make the team this year - you have until the end of May to attend as many events as possible to get yourself into a good standing on the WestGamer 40K Generals League ladder. Good luck!
