GENERAL KINGS OF WAR HOBBY THREAD

I figure I'll kick things off with what I did to change my army. Strictly speaking you wouldn't have to do this (just rank up your models as normal to universal base regiment footprints), but IMO, it's well worth it and pretty straightforward. It also gives you the chance to spread out your models a bit more. Bit cheeky but well, student mentailty dies hard. :D

Method:
- Buy MDF sheet and corkboard ($15ish total)
- Cut MDF sheets to universal base sizes (I cut to Troops and Regiments sizes to give better armybuilding flexibility).
- Add cork and sand to freshly cut sheets. I added an extra layer of glue here across the top to seal it.
- Paint.
- Add grass or similar.
- Remove old bases from models.
- Glue models onto new base.
- Rinse and repeat.

So far I've done:
- 4 Ax Troops
- 2 Ax Regiments
- 2 Greatax Troops
- 1 Greatax Regiment
- 2 Skulker Troops
- 1 Slasher

I haven't quite finished yet (need to do cavalry, chariots, giants, war drums) so updates to come. :D

Nice work Brookesy. They still look packed, and the chaotic look of an unruly mob of orcs looks better than the neat rows we're used to seeing!

I've seen some terrible examples of these around... half a dozen models spread out on a base to represent 20 models really doesn't cut it, so it's good to see someone use to best effect.

Yeah fair enough. Most of mine have the base looking full (approx 14-15 = 20). I will confess that I miscalculated when it came to my Greatax troops though (only 5-6 = 10).

So far I've found the happy medium (for Orcs at least) is around the 70% mark. They tend to take up enough room for it to work.

Yeah I think 50% is probably the minimum you could get away with, obviously more is better. If it looks sparse it's probably too few.

I love the modelling opportunities these bases open up though. Have got some wood elves in the mail, can't wait to get the based up and start playing some games!

I see something like this and think that's really cool:

Then I see something like this:

The painting is amazing, but it is missing the point to me...

27/40 on the first base and 5/20 on the second. for me i say around the 60% mark but again going by how full the base looks.

Agree with your examples Orange. The key if your using very few models is to make the base look busy/evocative through other means.

That zombie one does look neat.

The Dwarf one wouldn't look as bad as long as there was a dwarven anvil in the middle .... or something at least :P

Haha yeah just a touch.. XD

I liked most the mantic CD range, but the only alternative models were expensive forgeworld ones. Always loved the 6th/7th ed WE models and can get second hand GW stuff cheap so it was perfect. Made the decision for wood elves and about 10 minutes later found a cheap bundle of everything I wanted haha. :D

I would agree on there should be feel to the base a hoard should look like a hoard.

http://firewaterportal.blogspot.com.au/ ... lenge.html

and ere is a link to the general painting blog I run for my work.
you will find a lot of Mantic painted minis on there.
