So I have a few people cajoling me to get into Firestorm.

Does anyone on Westgamer do this thing? I know Onyx has some FA stuff but I don't know how much he had played.

There are some folks at TGA Central who play. I've seen them a number of times. Ivoryskull can probably give you their names.

I have an Aquan fleet but haven't played. It looks good, but right now Heavy Gear Blitz (and painting up Infinity) are keeping me busy.

Some Directorate Cruisers I am working on:

And then it will be these funky R&D Cruiser cyber-warfare ships (Cruiser and hand for size comparison).

Very nice, I really like the blue finish on the Cruisers!

They look a lot more sinister than the Star Trek white paint schemes on the box cover. How did you do them?

Black undercoat with a GW Ultramarines colour and Nagaroth Nightshade. Leadbelcher, more Nightshade and then the brightest silver I could find for the metallics for contrast. In the setting, the Directorate are scary, amoral corporate overlords so I wanted a scarier look, but still relatively "clean" as befits the setting.

Nice! It manages to combine both "sinister" and "clean".

Exactly the images associated with evil corporations. :)

I've been tempted by this game for a while now :)

Quick question for those who play both games: how does it compare to Dystopian Wars? Is it just DW in space, or are there enough differences (rules, unit profiles or both) to set it apart?

I love the models and as a long time BFG addict, it shouldn't take much to drag me into this!

It's not Dystopian Wars in space. As I came from DWars, I instantly noticed a lot of the same mechanics, terminology and conventions (range bands, MARs, exploding dice etc.). Although I have yet to play a game as I'm still putting my fleet together, you can see a lot of differences too. Obviously there's a stack of mechanics that are specific to a space setting (gravitational slingshots, orbital terrain etc.), but there seem to be more fundamental differences. For a starter, everything seems to move a bit faster and where in DWars you are jostling for position, in Firestorm Armada you will be spending more time flying around in a gigantic fleet-based dogfight. One of my favourite aspects of the DWars game with the Aerial units is that you get a swirling maelstrom of units zipping around the board, so this really appeals. Armada is simpler at face value, but in a good way.

The unit profiles themselves share a fair few characteristics with DWars, but there are differences too. A profound difference in the way Range Bands work in Firestorm Armada is that the different weapons have different band lengths. IE. in DWars, all the range bands are 8", where as in Armada they start at 6" for the Terran's nukes through to the Dindrenzi Railguns at 10" so it has a real effect on the fleets. Each fleet has a radically different feel to it.

Also, this is a game really built around two big alliances, which means you get to mix and match a fair bit if so inclined.

Something I should add is the boarding actions in Armada are very different. DWars will usually have a fair bit of boarding going on, particularly if you are playing with Prussians, PLC or Blazing Suns in the game. In Armada, boarding is quite rare as each vessel can only organise boarding once per game. Further to this, you have to choose a location to board (helm, engines, weapons etc.) which will have a different effect. This is because well, the spaceships are massive, despite the fact they are only "representative" on the tabletop. Targeting is done flight-peg to flight-peg as space is really goddamned big and thus the ships are despite being freakin' huge on the tabletop are only really a sign of the scale against each other. The actual ship in the mechanics of the game is tiny.

Looking good. The dark blue goes very well with the dark metallics to lend a sinister corporate feel to the ships.

Do they do space stations? I never played Battlefleet Gothic but always liked the Blackstone Fortress and the Ramilles Starfort.

Actually all of the core factions space stations have been re-released in the Planetary Defence Groups boxed sets:http://www.spartangames.co.uk/planetary-defence-groups
